[Dec. 28th, 2009|12:33 pm] |
I was given 2 cats almost 3 weeks ago. I was taking care of one while his new home prepared for his arrival, and then the other guy is mine. Ever since they moved in it's been rough. They immediately got a respiratory infection, and I had to give them medicine. Plus they're skiddish to begin with. Big brother went to his new home yesterday, and I'm just left with little brother. I'm trying very hard to be patient, but it seems like this cat hates my guts.
I feed him, give him treats, he has toys, and I speak softly and coo at him. And every time I extend a hand, he swats and hisses. So i've taken the advice of a friend and decided to let him alone completely-- let him explore on his own now that the antibiotics are done. But I worry that this cat just hates me to the ore and will never come around...
He hides under the tub whenever i'm home, and has NEVER approached me.
It makes me sad, I guess. Really, really sad. |

| New Years at the Castle? Also shopping question |
[Dec. 26th, 2009|09:03 pm] |
So The Castle was recommended to me earlier as a good gothy place to chill for New Years. Great frustration on trying to get information on the event off their website. There is none! Like where to get tickets? Do they sell tickets? Is there going to be a theme? When do the doors open, will it be the same as normal or earlier or???? Is there a dress code as my friend isn't the uber goth I'd email them but they only have a link for their email which doesn't work on my computer. So I ask here since you have all been so helpful to me previously!
A secondary question is, I plan to do my boxing day shopping in Florida! Yay! Where are good places to go clothing shopping for the tall and curvy girls? Sizes here tend to be on the petite size or business casual for 40 year olds for everything else. I need me some casual summer clothing that isn't teensy weensy. If it helps, I dress like I live in San Francisco. Hippie chick meets goth girl.
Thank you for the help and I can't wait to see your city! :D |

| Found dog |
[Dec. 26th, 2009|12:55 pm] |
My boyfriend and I live off of MacDill Ave between MLK Drive and Hillsborough Ave, and a Yorkie followed him up to our apartment last night. He has a tag with a Miami-area phone number and a name. We tried calling the number, but the voice mail box is full. This morning, we took him over to the Animal Coalition of Tampa, who checked him for a microchip. However, the microchip is not registered. So, we're at a dead-end. Being that the tag would indicate the dog is from the Miami area, we think that the owners are up in this area on a trip. Below the cut are a couple of photos. The hair on his back is grey, so we were told that the breed is commonly referred to as Silkie.
Edited to add: We found his home.

Happy Holidays to everyone!
I was driving around tonight and saw the insane light show going on at my local Chick-fil-a (Waters Ave) and was wondering what other crazy holiday displays were out there. So here is my challenge to you all- find and take a picture of the craziest holiday displays you can find and post them here.

| Alarm Systems? |
[Dec. 23rd, 2009|02:49 pm] |
Hey Tampa, what type of alarm systems do you guys use if you live in a house? How much do you pay and for what? Do you like it? Are there any companies you would run like hell from?
Two of our close friends got robbed within a month so we are thinking of activating one. We already have a pre-installed ADT system that we never used in our house.
Somebody recommended savemyalarm.com but I read horrible reviews about it, even though it looks cheap. Anyone have good/bad experiences with this one?
On the (jokingly) other hand, anyone have experience rigging a guillotine on top of your TV? That may be an alternative too....but then my laptop would still be out in the open. And I don't want broken windows. |

So what's with the crappy poasts, tampa? You people are so boaring.
Anyway, I'm in the market for a new beverage coaster for my desk. The one I currently have is a cheap bamboo and cork jobby from wally world and I hate it. I'm thinking these babies from crate&barrel, but I'm iffy. Anyway, what do you use, tampa? And does anyone want to date me?
Spoiler alert!
( I went with the cb... )
It's super awesome. Note the non-alcoholic beer, because I'm not a fucking alcoholic, like you are.* *or actually I am, which is why I'm drinking non-alcoholic. But I digest... |

| Die...2009...die...die...die... |
[Dec. 22nd, 2009|08:06 pm] |
So, the hits just keep on coming this December. During Saturday's snowstorm an NYC Sanitation Truck smacked a utility pole across the street from our house, yanking out our power line. Miraculously, our power remained on, unfortunately, this happened at 2 am and kept us up until after 6 am, with cameos from the Fire Department, Con Ed, a Sanitation Dept Supervisor, and an earth mover to clear snow so the Con Ed truck could manage the hill and get the power line repaired. One idiot in a truck managed to hit the power line, ignoring the truck guarding it (also, stuck in the ice). I found myself clearing our steps at 5 am with a gardening shovel, because, oh ha ha, we had no shovel, stupid me forgot pours broke last year and we hadn't replaced it. I didn't want the Con Ed worker falling down the steps as the firemen and I had (I hit my head on the downed power line retaining box twice, but didn't get any electrical super powers. No luck, I tell you). So, fun up the ass, there, just as Sarah's root canal pain died down and a few family-spawned nightmares developed.
Further fun -- I couldn't get out of here on Sunday because of the snow, and had to make do with the gardening shovel to clear our walk. My back is now spasming like a worm orgy on a white-hot skillet as a result of the weekend, and my arms feel like someone played Stretch Armstrong with them, forgetting they aren't rubber. You know those cartoonists who hit the wights and are in great shape? All dozen or three of them? I'm not one of them. As it pained me to realize, yet again. Fucking ouch, man. Fucking ouch.
And yesterday - some scumbag parks his car in front of our cleared garage and goes to work, leaving the car for at least ten hours. So, we couldn't get our car out of the garage. And if you're familiar with Satan Island (my sympathies), you need your car if you have plans. Called 311, no help. I did get to shovel some more with the glorified two-handed spade. Why didn't I write a note last year: "Shovel broken. You live in NYC. Might need another one. Seriously, consider buying a new shovel."?
And today -- well, we found out we're writing a good-sized check tomorrow, to an electrician, to fix the damage to the house and power lines. And we're putting in a claim for the damage with the city. But even if we get the money quickly (ha ha), this is a seriously big swift kick in the teeth, after several swift shots to the head and kidneys this year. We simply cannot catch a fucking break. I was going to say at least we have our health, but...that's kind of debatable. At least our daughter has her health. There. Good.
In other news:
I'll be on SLG Radio tomorrow, Wednesday, at 5 pm EST instead of Thursday. Dan Vado and I will yell at one another for an hour about whatever the hell crops up. Maybe I'll throw myself off a building during the podcast, that might actually get a few listeners to the archives.
Beasts of Burden #4 ships tomorrow to various comic shops. And then we're done, at least for now. My thanks to everyone out there who picked up the series, gave it a try, gave it some ink or helped spread the word online. It's all been appreciated. This really has been a pet project of mine (sorry), and the response from the readers has been incredibly gratifying. If all goes well, we hope to have some good news on further material sometime next year, fingers crossed. And we'll definitely have a collection of the first 8 stories out mid-2010. I think Jill and I made some good comics, I really do. I hope we get to make some more. Hope #4 works okay for you folks who will be picking it up, thanks again.
This decade can't end soon enough. Honestly. |

| black light diner distro, december 2009 update |
[Dec. 20th, 2009|08:39 pm] |
Hello everyone! Just a little update about the new zines available at Black Light Diner Distro!

HELLO ALABAMA: A ONE-SHOT DISASTER (Tuscaloosa, AL)
Courtney's (Muse) anti-love letter to Alabama was written after she packed up and moved from North Carolina to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to attend library science school. The move came with an unexpected downside in the racist and conservative attitudes of some of her classmates. While certainly not indicting all Alabamans, Courtney describes the self-silencing she must go through to be safe in her new location, from being forced to tear a pro-choice sticker off her car to having to check her political ideals at the door in order to have at least a few friends. There's also a piece about the underfunded and underutilized recycling program in Tuscaloosa, and how its mismanagement by clueless city officials has had devastating consequences for the working-class community who must live next to the plant. I've never moved to a drastically different geographical location (yet), but as someone who grew up in a more conservative area the themes of alienation rang true, and I think this would be a great zine for anyone who feels out of step with their surroundings, whether they're a native or a newcomer.
( more )
Also, I'm really on the lookout for some new zines to carry, in particular personal comics. If you have something you think I'd be interested in, drop me an email or send it to me!
Thanks for reading, Erica |

| Painters |
[Dec. 19th, 2009|06:38 pm] |
Hi again!
We found a house in Riverview and will find out when we close next week. It's a new house so the walls are all beige. Neither of us want to paint ourselves, so I'm planning on hiring painters. Any recommendations? |

Someone I know was just asked to join a very awesome band that just got signed to a major indie label. There is a potential 6 month tour of the country involved. They're balking because they have a great job that makes a shit ton of money at the moment.. A job that would possibly be lost if they go.
I'm Screaming, "GO! GO NOW!! THIS IS THE OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME!!"
I feel like that's good advice.. But It gets me thinking about all the hopes I had for the music industry.. My step-dad has offered many, many times for me to start booking his and other bands for a 10% cut, which-- if I get good and get my contacts right, could be VERY lucrative. But the amount of time & effort involved in establishing that base is something I couldn't work a day job and do. Plus I think it could make me happy. The booking agents I know personally make THOUSANDS of dollars a week. Have HUGE houses, great cars, etc..
I just know that working in any industry other than the entertainment industry would make me nuts. I'm absolutely lucky to have found the job I have now, but there's no chance for moving up in the company. No chance for more money. And while I don't necessarily do it for the money, it would be nice to be financially stable without worry. |

| | Criminal Minds | ] | I'm finally getting my license this week or next (hopefully), and I was wondering if any of you can recommend which DMV I should use? The one near HCC is the first one I think of, but I feel like that one would be much more crowded and stuff than any others.
Also, does anyone know what exactly they have on the tests? Parking, turns, et cetera?
Thanks in advance! |
